WATIV, live the Mudlark Theater
WATIV is Will A Thompson IV (keys, laptop), James Singleton (bass, trumpet, effects), Chris Alford (guitar, effects), and Simon Lott (drums, effects). The music of WATIV defies categorization but can be described as experimental electronic free jazz.
This performance was recorded live at the Mudlark Theater, an old house in the St. Roch neighborhood that has been converted into a lovely performance space. WATIV takes full advantage of the acoustics of the room, with each of the four musicians setting up in a different corner and placing the audience directly in the middle of the band. The sounds surround the listener as they reverberate off of centuries old wooden architectural components. An unexpected contribution to this performance came from an apparently stoned neighbor lady who was inspired by the music to add in her own sound effects, making the experience even more surreal. The entire sonic journey is offered as one uninterrupted track, so just kick back, turn it on, and prepare to be transported to another dimension courtesy of WATIV.

Beautiful Bells
Using the name Beautiful Bells, Justin Peake weaves mesmerizing aural tapestries out samples and homemade beats. Listeners are brought into a blissful trance by lush harmonies and rich sonorities cascading over subtly complex lounge/hip hop grooves.
This live recording captures Beautiful Bells in its home environment, at the Dragon's Den on a Monday night for the Merged Music series. The weekly concert series is curated by Justin Peake and regularly features some of the city's most creative electronic musicians, often with accompanying live visual graphics to complete the experience. It's more fresh sounds, straight out of New Orleans! Live Music NOLA is pleased to bring you No Hand Jiving, an intriguing project led by Scott A. Nicholson that features original spoken word compositions against a backdrop of free improvisational music. "Sammy Don't Step On Her" is the name given to this particular incarnation of No Hand Jiving, which includes Brad Walker on sax, Jesse Morrow on Bass, Marcello Benetti on drums, and William A. Thompson on keys. The band members are all veterans of New Orleans' experimental jazz scene, performing regularly at Open Ears music series (the excellent weekly showcase curated by Jeff Albert), which explains the psychic connection that the players seem to have with each other. Enjoy, and share it with friend...

Presenting the third and most recent live performance from the Music Box on Piety St in the 9th Ward. The ensemble is conducted by Quintron and features musicians from New Orleans, Detroit, Chicago, and elsewhere. Visit the Music Box website (http://www.dithyrambalina.com) for more info on this fascinating and unique project. Also check out this writeup by OffBeat Magazine:
THE MUSIC BOX IN THE BYWATER: A HOUSE IN E MAJOR
The dark, ramshackle house at 1027 Piety St. was a haunting presence on the block even before the flood. It was the oldest house on the street, dating back to the end of the 18th Century when it was surrounded by swamp and muddy sandbars built from the seasonal overflow of the Mississippi. Since 1999, wayfarers were constantly shuttling in and out of the place, congregating on the porch and playing an assortment of esoteric stringed instruments. At one point, a busload of clowns parked out front.
The punishing winds of the 2005 hurricanes pushed the old house closer to its demise, even as more artists and musicians came through. Caledonia “Swoon” Curry decorated the front porch with her ethereal wheat paste constructions. In 2010, Swoon came up with the idea of building what she called a Dithyrambalina—a house made with built-in musical instruments. With the cooperation of the property owner Jay Pennington (who works with bounce artist Big Freedia as DJ Rusty Lazer) and his partner in the New Orleans Airlift project, artist/curator Delaney Martin, Swoon constructed a small scale model of the Dithyrambalina and Martin began to organize the project.
Then the partially demolished house decided to make its own contribution.

Blind Texas Marlin
Blind Texas Marlin is the musical vehicle for John Curry's stunning original folk songs. The band takes its name from a very early recording that may or may not have been of the blues legend Blind Willie Johnson, credited only as “Blind Tx Marlin”.
Curry is perhaps best known for his high energy, expressive, and intense delivery as the frontman for beloved local rock band Felix. This musical background brings a rawness and edge to the traditional Appalachian Folk influence that he absorbed growing up in North Carolina before moving to New Orleans. The band brings together good friends from the Bywater and Garden District neighborhoods, capable musicians that frequently perform around town together in various musical constellations.
This performance was recorded live at the Pearl, one of the most historic and majestic houses in all the Bywater. The home is a well preserved yet crumbling palace, filled with eccentric artistic curiosities and original architectural elements made of barge board salvaged from ships that travelled down the Mississippi River over 200 years ago. The sonority of this recording is colored by centuries of history as sound waves bounce off the ancient walls of the Pearl.

Mike Dillon Band
New Orleans based vibraphonist/percussionist Mike Dillon is one of the leading creative visionaries behind modern punk jazz. His insane enthusiasm and passion for music is unrivaled, as evidenced by the burning energy of his live shows. This passion drives Mike D to perform well over 300 shows a year; playing regularly around town with local musicians and touring across the country with his bands Garage A Trois, Dead Kenny G's, Illuminasti, and others.
In Mike Dillon's latest project he is joined by Bru Bruser on bass (of Gov't Majik), with Carly and Adam G on trombone and drums (of Yojimbo). The band is well suited for interpreting Mike Dillon's unique compositions. Their sound is a seamless fusion of jazz, punk rock, funk, and hip hop that pays homage to diverse influences including Mike Watt, Fela Kuti, and NWA. This live performance was recorded at the Dragon's Den on the mouth of Frenchman Street, at the stroke of midnight on Lundigras 2012. It captures that moment in time when mardi gras revelry that has been building for weeks begins to reach its fevered apex. Local keyboardist Brian Coogan joins the band halfway through the set, and the energy completely boils over.
The Mike Dillon Band is currently touring the East Coast, so please check them out if you happen to be out that way. Listen to the recording for free and if you like the music, please support the artists by downloading the entire set for only five bucks.

The Eris Band, recorded live at the Eris Ball 2012 at Iron Works on Piety Street. Hear the energy of a +40 piece ensemble (brass/woodwind/drums) mixing with a rapturous crowd into total, beautiful mardi gras revelry.
If you would like a copy of this performance, download it and pay what you feel is reasonable. 50% of the proceeds go towards paying the legal costs of a dozen Eris musicians that were arrested by overzealous police in the infamous fiasco of 2011 Eris Parade. Enjoy!

Smoker's World combines the soul of New Orleans with the strut of Houston, the strings of Memphis and the swamps of Mississippi. The band's leader Derrick Freeman, originally from Houston Tx, has been making music in New Orleans for years. Derrick studied drums with Shannon Powell and plays regularly as a member of Kermit Ruffin's Barbecue Swingers, as well as other projects with top local musicians such as Corey Henry (of Rebirth Brass Band and Galactic) and Jonathan Freilich (of Naked Orchestra, The Tom Paines, Mas Mamones, etc). In addition to playing drums Derrick is also a skilled lyricist, having honed his craft on tour nationally with New Orleans brass/hip hop band Coolbone. Please enjoy this performance recorded at the Blue Nile, and keep an eye out for Derrick's next project "World Be Freeman", which is sure to blow everyone's minds.
